FSA CARAS: The Nature and Scope of Research Activity at BCIT
Background
In the spring of 2016 FSA created the Caucus on Applied Research and Advanced Studies (CARAS) to provide leadership in defining the vision for, and value of, applied research and advanced studies at BCIT and to facilitate FSA member participation in decisions regarding applied research and advanced studies at BCIT. In its first year members of CARAS quickly identified the need to know more about research work at BCIT. In August 2016 the FSA Board of Directors approved funding for a research project on research at BCIT.
Project Scope
Through research and consultation with FSA staff, members, and external sources, seek to answer the following questions:
- What do we mean by ‘applied research’ and ‘advanced studies’ at BCIT?
- What research is happening at BCIT?
- Why do we do research at BCIT?
- Who is doing the research at BCIT?
- What are the different models of research being used at BCIT?
- What supports are available for research at BCIT?
- What barriers exist to conducting research at BCIT?
- How are FSA members getting research done?
- Funding, managing workload, incorporating students, mentoring, etc.
- How do these models and resourcing methods compare with other institutions in the BC post-secondary sector?
Project Outcomes
- A report answering the questions above; and any other that may arise
- A map/inventory of research happening at BCIT
- A list of people and tools available to support research at BCIT
Timeline
A contractor will be selected in early December and work should begin as soon as possible. Final submission of the report is due at the end of January 2017.
Budget
The maximum budget allotment for this project is $25,000 including all materials.
Contract Terms
Payment for services will be issued as follows: 50 percent of total fee upon signing of contract and 50 percent upon delivery of final report.
