    Member Voices: Technology and Cultural Teachings

    To mark National Indigenous Peoples Day, FSA member and Instructor in Forest and Natural Areas Management Justin Perry shares some thoughts on mixing technological education with cultural practices, inviting readers to participate in Indigenous Community gatherings.

    When I share my understanding of culture in the classroom, I always invite our students to participate. Everyone has their own path to walk, and if they do not feel like participating, I don’t hold it against them. These discussions are always voluntary. For example, to begin a field trip I often offer smudging to acknowledge the care takers of the land, give thanks, and clear the mind. I let people know they are invited to join, and if they would not like to participate, they may re-enter the circle after the smudge is complete.

    One may ask “why talk about this at a technological institute?”

    Evolving our use of technology is vital in this increasingly complex world. But technology is not the only thing we can use for own wellbeing.

    Increasingly, our students are seeking relief from anxiety and stress. For the most part, they have benefitted greatly from these types of talks. From my own experience I can say that culture, community, and storytelling are some of the best remedies I have found to feel better.

    I’m grateful for the support and breathing room I’ve had to integrate more Indigenous knowledge into the classroom and for the guidance of our elders in residence. Reconciliation and moving forward together is a work in progress, but I believe we are headed in the right direction.
