Members Update: Christmas Break Period 2014

Members Update: Christmas Break Period 2014

    What is Christmas Break?

Break periods are governed by Article 8.7.1 of the collective agreement, which states:

8.7.1 Term, Spring and Christmas break periods are not considered vacation periods. Duty allocations during Term, Spring, and Christmas break periods shall be decided by each Department, consistent with fair treatment for each Employee within the Department, and any Employee without such assigned duty shall not be required to be in attendance at the Institute.

In 2001, BCIT and the FSA went to arbitration regarding the application of this article. Christmas Break periods are now administered in accordance with that arbitration decision and a subsequent agreement (Memag 01FSA31).

Departments decide on duty allocations. Employees not required to be on campus will be considered as “On Duty Off Campus” (ODOC).

For additional information on the ‘Christmas Break’ period see our member guide (PDF) [NOTE: the dates in the guide are not updated – current 2014/15 dates are below].

For additional information or questions about your specific situation please contact the FSA directly.
