Policy 5401 Working Group: Update and Call for Member Participation

    Policy 5401 Changes

BCIT is proposing a policy change to dramatically cut the minimum credit count for diplomas from 110 to 75 credits, without consulting individual Departments on the feasibility or pedagogical soundness of these across-the-board cuts. The FSA believes Departments should be consulted individually and thoroughly before any such significant proposed change to your programs and credentials. All Departments are urged to write EdCo in January with your response and concerns. The FSA is supporting Departments with their responses as well as coordinating our own official response. The “Policy 5401 Working Group” of FSA Members is leading this effort.

    Policy 5401 Working Group

On Wednesday, members of the above-mentioned FSA working group met for the first time. The working group established a Terms of Reference and next steps, including a communications plan. The working group will meet next on January 3, 2024—open to all FSA Members. In the meantime, the group is putting together a template for Departmental communication to the employer. We highly encourage Departments to meet in the new year to discuss the proposed policy changes. Please keep up with the Friday bulletin, beginning again January 12, 2024, for more information. Here are upcoming key dates:

January 3: Working Group Meeting (open to all Members, contact us to attend)
January 10: Tech Rep Meeting (communications plan distributed to all Departments
January 17: FSA Board of Directors will endorse FSA official response (response will be made public)
January 24: FSA General Meeting (update for all Members on action plan)
January 31: Deadline to submit feedback to EdCo
