    Change to BCIT Custodial Services

    Change to BCIT Custodial Services

With the change in contracts for BCIT’s custodial services, the staff who maintain our facilities are being faced with losing their jobs or taking significant pay cuts.  BCIT claims to manage the Institute according to the values of dignity, respect, well-being, diversity, fair treatment, and equal opportunity. When it comes to the most vulnerable and lowest paid workers on campus, these values have been set aside. BCIT could have required that preserving the jobs and quality of employment be a condition of a new service contract. It chose not to do so.

On behalf of our 1600 members working at BCIT, the Faculty and Staff Association has conveyed its deep disappointment at BCIT’s failure to protect these members of our community. We know that our members care about working conditions and adequate pay for all people who work on the BCIT campus. To support our custodial staff in their efforts to secure appropriate work and adequate pay, we have drafted a personal reference letter that members can provide for custodial staff.

    Download template reference letter.

On behalf of the FSA, thank you to all of the custodial staff at BCIT who contribute to a better learning and working environment.
