Modifications to Voting at General Meetings

Modifications to Voting at General Meetings

The FSA’s January GM saw the membership overwhelmingly approve changes to our bylaws that facilitate online meetings. Our upcoming April 26, 2023 GM will be the first under the new bylaw regime, so we wanted to share a bit about how voting will look.

Members will continue to have the option to attend GMs in person or via Zoom, using the Zoom desktop or mobile applications (web client and phone-in options are incompatible). All members, even if they attend in person, will be registered for the Zoom meeting with the email address to which the FSA sends communications (i.e. the address where you receive the FSA’s weekly e-bulletin or FSA membership meeting invitations). Members should receive their confirmation of registration email no later than April 25. There will be no subsequent action required to register. If you do not receive your confirmation of registration email, please contact us: fsa@bcit.ca. The confirmation email will include your unique link to join the meeting, permitting you to attend from only one device at a time.

During the meeting, online voting will be conducted through Zoom polls, verified through your registrant ID, and will not be anonymous. Members who choose to attend in person should not join the Zoom meeting. Voting for in-person attendees will instead proceed by show of hands. In-person attendees must bring their BCIT ID with them to GMs in order to register.

A friendly reminder: proxy voting is expressly forbidden in our bylaws. Therefore, members should not forward their unique link to anyone else.

Members will soon receive an updated Outlook calendar invitation reflecting the described changes, which will no longer include a Zoom link. Instead, each member will receive a unique link in their confirmation of registration email.
